Certification vs certificate vs badge vs degree
Four different credential types that are easy to confuse — and why a course is not a certification.
What it means
These four words are not interchangeable, and conflating them is one of the most common ways career-changers get misled.
A proctored certification is earned by passing a supervised exam set by a vendor or standards body. CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701), Cisco CCNA (200-301), and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) are proctored certifications: you sit an invigilated exam against published objectives.
A professional certificate (or course) is a learning program you complete, not an exam you pass under supervision. The Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate on Coursera is a course-based credential, not a proctored certification. We label it honestly: finishing a course is not the same as passing a certification exam.
A badge is a digital marker of a narrower achievement — completing a module, attending training, or demonstrating one skill. A badge can be issued for a course or a certification, so the badge alone does not tell you which underlying credential it represents.
A degree is a multi-year academic qualification awarded by an accredited college or university; it is broader and longer than any single certification, certificate, or badge.
RoleMath keeps these distinct because the honest framing matters: we never present a course as if it were a certification, and we do not imply any of them is a hiring requirement.
