Realistic First Role

This is a two-step path: build data skills first (see our data guide), then move toward AI Specialist. AI is not a direct first job — treat it as a step-2 goal.

The Pathway

Military Veteran → Data Analyst first (build data foundation — see military-veteran-to-data guide) → AI Specialist (step 2, after data foundation).

What to Study

Start with AI literacy (free, honest courses — Elements of AI, Google AI Essentials — see our AI Learning Programs catalog) to understand the field, and build the data foundation (Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate — a professional certificate/course, not a proctored certification — plus SQL). The Cisco AI Technical Practitioner is a credential for those already technical. Use GI Bill / VET TEC funding where eligible.

Reality Check

Be wary of any program promising an AI career without a data/software foundation — that is the exact over-promise we refuse to make. AI literacy is valuable for everyone; an AI role is a multi-step path that requires a data foundation first. No course secures employment on its own.
