Is the AI-900 exam still available, and did Azure AI Fundamentals retire?

Two different things happened here, and mixing them up is why this question keeps getting confusing answers. The exam retired. The certification did not.

When we read Microsoft's exam page on 2026-07-30, it carried this notice:

The certification requirements have changed. The AI-900 exam was retired on June 30, 2026, and has been replaced by AI-901. To earn this certification, candidates must now pass AI-901.

So on 2026-07-30, Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals was still listed as a credential you could earn — what changed was which exam earns it. If you are partway through studying, the objectives to check against are AI-901's.

One thing to expect if you look yourself: on 2026-07-30 that same page still printed "Retirement date: none" further down, directly below the notice saying the exam had retired. Microsoft's page contradicted itself there. We report the explicit notice, which is the more specific of the two statements, and flag the conflict rather than hide it.

What we don't know

We have not verified whether AI-900 remained schedulable anywhere after its retirement date, or how long a pass already earned continues to count toward the certification. Microsoft's page does not say, and we will not guess at either. Everything above describes what that page said on 2026-07-30; the page itself is the authority here, not this one.
